How Natural are ‘Natural’ ingredients?

These days, the term ‘natural ingredients’ is thrown around quite loosely. What does it really mean when a product is labelled as ‘natural’? Here are 5 levels of what natural ingredients could mean, starting from the most natural to the least.

1 ) Totally 100% Natural in Raw Form

This means that the bottle is full of the actual plants, roots, flowers, bark, and leaves. Obviously, this would be impossible to apply to the skin or scalp directly, and certainly not suitable to ingest.

2) Natural Extracts

In this case, you get an infusion of the extracts, which are all the active components of the plant.… This is also totally 100% natural, but slightly processed since the extracts have been, well, extracted from the plants, roots, flowers, bark, and leaves.

3) Naturally Derived Ingredients

The next level is ingredients that are naturally derived, meaning that a natural ingredient was used to turn it into a functional ingredient that helps with the absorption, ability to spread, and overall effectiveness of the product.

4) Ingredients that are not harmful

This category includes Ingredients that are basically known to be safe for human use.

5) Toxic, harmful ingredients

These are additives in many products that are irritants and can be harmful with prolonged use on skin and hair. These include Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, phthalates, parabens, and formaldehydes.

For our products, we on levels 2 and 3 as much as possible. There is no such thing as 100% natural, as that would be all raw material. You can rest assured that we do NOT use any of the bad stuff in our wonderful products.
